Cover Letter Resources
The Harvard Extension School guide includes a clear structure for opening, middle, and closing paragraphs, sample cover letters, dos and don'ts, and guidance on tailoring letters to specific roles, all without any commercial bias or paywall.

I strongly recommend you write your Cover letter in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
-
Mentioning software you are not actually proficient in. Studios will test your skills, and claiming experience in Nuke, Houdini, or Unreal Engine that you do not have will be obvious within the first week on the job.
-
Writing a generic letter and swapping out the studio name. Studios like ILM, Framestore, and Riot Games have distinct cultures, pipelines, and project slates. If your letter could have been sent to any studio, it will read like it was.
-
Focusing only on what the studio can do for you. Phrases like "I would love the opportunity to learn from your team" put the benefit on your side. Flip it and show what you bring to their pipeline.
-
Ignoring the non-artist roles in the job description. VFX and games are deeply collaborative industries. If the posting mentions cross-department communication, meeting deadlines under pressure, or working with production, and you do not address those, you are leaving half the job description unanswered.
Cover Letter Mishaps
Harvard Career Resume Resource
You don't have to use these templates; however, I like them for their clean, professional, and ATS-systems-built templates. These templates ensure both software and recruiters see your skills. Note, Job Scan limits its free products and is a paid service
I strongly recommend you write your resume in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
Multiple columns or tables (scanners get confused)
Excessive graphics and bar charts for software skills
Photos or personal headshots (standard in many regions, but I advocate for simplicity)
A resume which is too general in scope.
Canva, or other template-building websites, as they are not ATS-compliant.
